The creative heart of Burning Man — massive installations, mutant vehicles, and unforgettable sound experiences.
Burning Man is the world's largest open-air art gallery. Hundreds of art installations are scattered across the playa, ranging from intimate interactive pieces to massive structures visible from miles away.
Many installations are funded through the Burning Man Arts program, which distributes grants to artists. Others are self-funded passion projects. All are gifts to the community.
Art at Burning Man is interactive — you are encouraged to touch, climb, enter, and engage with most installations. Look for signs indicating if an artwork is climbable or has specific interaction guidelines.
Mutant vehicles are one of the most iconic features of Burning Man. These are heavily modified vehicles that have been transformed into rolling works of art — from fire-breathing dragons to pirate ships, giant animals, and fantastical machines.
All mutant vehicles must be licensed by the DMV (Department of Mutant Vehicles) before they can drive on the playa. They serve as mobile stages, dance floors, and gathering points, especially at night when they light up the desert.
If an art car stops near you and invites you aboard, that is a gift — enjoy the ride! But never jump onto a moving art car, and always follow the crew's instructions.
Burning Man features dozens of large-scale sound camps that rival the world's best nightclubs. From deep house and techno to funk, world music, and experimental sounds, there is something for every taste.
Notable sound camps include Robot Heart, Mayan Warrior, Distrikt, Camp Question Mark, and many more. These camps often feature internationally renowned DJs playing sunrise and sunset sets on the open playa.
Remember: there are no "headliners" or published lineups. Discovery is part of the magic. Follow the sound, explore, and let the music find you.
The climactic event of the festival. The iconic Man structure is burned in a massive celebration with fireworks, fire dancers, and tens of thousands of participants circling the blaze. The energy is electric, chaotic, and joyful.
A deeply emotional and solemn ceremony. Throughout the week, participants write messages to lost loved ones on the Temple walls. When it burns, the crowd sits in respectful silence. Many consider this the most powerful experience of the entire event.
Theme camps are the neighborhoods of Black Rock City. Each camp has a unique theme and offers activities, workshops, or experiences to the community. From yoga studios and pancake breakfasts to dance floors and art workshops, theme camps are where much of the community interaction happens.
You can join an existing theme camp (many recruit new members online before the event) or create your own. Theme camps must apply for placement through the Burning Man organization.
